NASHVILLE — Three divergent historic figures – an umpire, owner and player — from the early days of baseball were elected to the Hall of Fame by a 16-member committee Monday.
The three are Jacob Ruppert, the long-time owner of the New York Yankees who acquired Babe Ruth and built the historic stadium in the Bronx; Chicago native Hank O’Day, who umpired for 35 years and in 10 World Series, and James Deacon White, a 19th-century star who played all positions and caught games without a mask.
The three will be inducted into the Hall of Fame during ceremonies July 28 in Cooperstown, N.Y.
The 16-member panel who chose the three from a ballot of 10 consisted of Hall of Famers, executives and media.
