Twitter won’t shelter you, nourish you or quench your thirst, but in the time of Hurricane Sandy, it’s the most entertaining place to be. How people ever watched a presidential debate or weathered a hurricane without an incessant barrage of snarky tweets is difficult to imagine. Here’s a brief breakdown of Sandy’s anatomy on Twitter over the past 24 hours:

#Sandy
The standard hashtag for engaging in hurricane-related tweets

#Instacane
Hashtag for pictures of hurricane damages and its effects, crossover with Instagram

@AFrankenstorm, @XHurricaneSandy
Not surprisingly, there are a bunch of Hurricane Sandy parody accounts out there. These are a couple of the better ones.

@CoryBooker, @MikeBloomberg
Mayors of Newark, NJ, and NYC, respectively, can give you some useful updates about what’s happening and what to do during the storm.

A few of the more entertaining hurricane tweets, before they become cries of terror:

@KenJennings:
Everybody get your hurricane jokes out TODAY while it’s just killing Haitians and not white people yet

@pourmecoffee:
Should have played Tebow. I knew this would happen. #frankenstorm

@HIMANSHU
CHRIS CHRISTIE EATS HURRICANE SANDY, SAVES DAY

@lenadunham
My dad re: the hurricane: “I have tons of cash and a salad”

@rembert
TAKE ALL YOUR SPOTIFY PLAYLISTS OFFLINE. #sandy

And the hurricane tweet to end all hurricane tweets:

@LindsayLohan
