Authorities have charged a 34-year-old man in connection with a barricade situation in Gurnee this morning that led to two nearby schools to be locked down.

Kendrick Augillard of Zion was charged with home invasion, residential burglary, aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated cruelty to a companion animal, violation of an order of protection, and possession of a weapon with no firearms owners ID, according to a press release. Residential burglary alone is a felony charge that carries a sentence of six to 30 years in jail, the release states.

The investigation is continuing, according to police.

Augillard is currently in police custody. A bond hearing is scheduled for Saturday.

Four other people were in the home when a man fired the gun around 6:50 a.m., according to Tom Agos, a crime analyst with the Gurnee Police Department.

The four people fled the house and called 911. The family dog was shot during the incident and was later taken to an animal hospital, according to the press release. No human injuries were reported.

Agos said it appears to have been a domestic incident.

Police surrounded the house, and after a short negotiation, Augillard surrendered at about 10:15 a.m., according to the press release.

During the incident, River Trail School was placed on lockdown and students were diverted to Viking School. Students were returned to River Trail.

In Warren Township High School District 121, classes were been canceled at the O’Plaine campus for the day and only about 200 students out of 2,000 were in the school during the lockdown. Students who do not ride buses have were released after the incident ended. Buses took the remaining students home, according to a notice posted in the district’s website.

All after-school activities would run as scheduled, the notice said.
