If it wasn’t for Hinsdale Central’s ball-control offense in the second half, Lyons quarterback Tommy Fiedler might have ended up on the winning side.

Hinsdale Central scored on its first possession after halftime, then milked the clock on a 60-yard drive in the fourth to come away with a hard-earned 24-20 victory in Western Springs.

The victory could come with a price because receiver Ian Bunting was on crutches after catching one pass in the first quarter.

“That’s all the O-line, they were picking up blitzes, they were letting us move the ball,” Hinsdale Central quarterback Brian Owens said. “We knew this one wasn’t going to be easy. They were playing in front of their home crowd. We’re happy to come out of here with a victory.

“(Fiedler) played a great game; I was really impressed.”

Trailing 17-14 at halftime, Hinsdale Central (4-1, 2-1 West Suburban Silver) took the lead after a 4-yard pass from Owens to John Claussen. After Jake Elliott’s 39-yard field goal pulled Lyons (2-3, 1-2) within 21-20 in the fourth, the Red Devils mostly ran the ball, mixing in some key passes. A 38-yard field goal from John Andrews with 4 minutes, 26 seconds put the Red Devils ahead 24-20.

Fiedler, stepping in for Zach Mahoney (shoulder injury), was 14-for-25 for 268 yards with two touchdowns, including a 79-yarder to Jemari Burks.
