Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Being a third of the way through the season, I figure why not throw out some player and coach of the year candidates. Of course these can (and probably will) change. And the nominees are …

Player of the year

Aaron Bailey, QB, Bolingbrook: Illinois recruit lets his game speak for itself.

Tommy Fuessel, QB, Lincoln-Way East: NIU commit is using his speed to help the Griffins win.

Matt Alviti, QB, Maine South: Northwestern recruit will put up great stats.

Joe Zito, RB, Glenbard West: A blue-collar type who delivers in big situations.

Joey Rhattigan, RB, Neuqua Valley: Off to a terrific start, and so are the Wildcats.

Austin Guido, RB, Waubonsie Valley: Top-notch runner who will battle Rhattigan as the top back in the western burbs this season.

Ian Woodworth, QB, Marist: Bound to put up Tecmo Bowl-like passing yards. He isn’t the biggest kid, but his skills and ability are unquestioned.

LaQuon Treadwell, WR, Crete-Monee: Rated the nation’s top receiver for good reason.

Drew David, QB, Kaneland: Leads one of the state’s most explosive offenses, and he’s is only a junior.

Coach of the year

Pat Dunne, Marist: Changed the climate at Marist.

Mark Coglianese, Providence: Team is 3-0 when not many gave them a chance.

John Ivlow, Bolingbrook: New-school approach works for the Raiders.

Craig Buzea, Homewood-Floosmoor: Look for H-F to be a power in the South Suburbs for years to come.

John Wander, Downers Grove North: Trojans (3-0) on a roll after posting a 5-22 record the last three seasons.

Glen Kozlowski, North Chicago: Warhawks have a chance at the North Suburban Prairie title this fall.

Tim Zasada, Reavis: Rams are 3-0 for the first time in a long time.

James Brown, Brooks: Eagles are 1-2, but went toe to toe with Kaneland and Rock Island.

Fabray Collins, Robeson: Gave Joliet Catholic a serious test and can compete with any of the Class 5A powers.
