Before the season, Mount Carmel had some concern about its offensive line.
After Friday night’s Catholic League crossover game at De La Salle, the Caravan doesn’t appear to have anything to worry about.
No. 3 Mount Carmel seems bulletproof after rolling to a 55-0 win over the Meteors.
Mount Carmel scored on its first five possessions and had six touchdowns on its first 13 running plays. Draco Smith scored the first of his two TDs on a 52-yard run early in the first quarter, and Matt Domer added scoring runs of 70 and 41 yards for a 41-0 halftime lead.
“In past weeks we didn’t have our assignments down,” said senior offensive lineman Brian Parker. “This week we came out knowing what we were doing. Our running backs came up to us on the sidelines and congratulated us. It felt really good to open up those runs for the backs.”
Domer added a 58-yard touchdown run to open the second half, finishing with 202 yards and three touchdowns on eight carries. The Caravan (3-0) piled up 224 yards at halftime, 329 total.
“The offensive line, they’re great blockers,” Domer said. “We can’t do it without them.”
Mount Carmel’s defense, especially linebacker D.J. Romero, held De La Salle running back to Mikale Wilbon to 53 yards on 20 carries. He came into the game with 497 rushing yards for the Meteors (2-1).
