Notre Dame’s perilously precarious situation at cornerback became a five-alarm disaster on Monday.

Lo Wood, expected to be a starter and one of two players at the spot with anything remotely close to quality experience, suffered an Achilles tendon injury in practice and therefore is expected to miss the season, a source confirmed.

Irish Illustrated first reported Wood’s injury, which creates a hole that Notre Dame simply may not be able to fill adequately for 2012. The Irish likely are left to start Bennett Jackson, a former receiver, and one of five players from the sophomore or freshman class with experience primarily on special teams — or none at all.

Wood, a 5-foot-10-inch junior, played in 21 games in his first two seasons with the Irish and recorded 10 tackles and one interception.

A Notre Dame spokesman declined comment. Irish coach Brian Kelly is scheduled to meet with the media on Tuesday.
