How does a newspaper decide where to put all the stories that appear on its pages? Collaboration. One key member of the team is the Editing & Presentation designer that works with everyone to “book” each section, using our experience and judgment to prioritize each story, graphic and photo, and finding a place for each. And then we hurry it to the presses.
There’s no such thing as a typical day, but there are common challenges: We discuss the best way to crop and use photos. We find a way to finesse a headline with size, color and typography. Or we break a narrative into easier-to read pieces. Even white space is at our disposal when we are laying out a photo page. It’s the making of visual music. We often work on it as news breaks.
We’re also the ones in the newsroom who talk most with press workers. We make sure they have the finished pages we’ve designed. We’re even called upon to stop or hold the presses once in a while.
Finally, though we keep a deep love for the print newspaper, we work in concert with our online team and broadcast partners to create a rich experience no matter which medium readers use to find out what’s going on.
We hope that we lure you in with a headline, poignant quote, graphic or compelling photo, relate those elements together — and keep you reading.
