This isn’t really Orioles news, but since Bryce Harper is headed to town, we’ll stretch the rules.
The Washington Nationals phenom and Under Armour pitchman told Comcast SportsNet on Thursday that the Baltimore-based apparel company will begin selling T-shirts featuring his “that’s a clown question, bro” phrase.
In case you’ve never heard of YouTube — or don’t read Kevin Cowherd — the Nats’ 19-year-old outfielder had that response when a Canadian reporter tried to ask him what his favorite beer was after a recent game in Toronto. (Harper is of legal drinking age north of the border.)
To his credit — and that of the PR staffer who intercepted the question before Harper could even start his response — Harper didn’t take the bait. Instead, he did what any enterprising young athlete should in today’s age, say something that will go viral and allow your sponsors to start cashing the checks.
Time will tell if Harper needs to dodge any “clown questions” this weekend at Camden Yards. I’d bet you a freshly minted Under Armour tee that he will.
More Top Picks Mops
UPDATE: This should come as no surprise, but Harper has filed for a United States trademark for the word mark “THAT’S A CLOWN QUESTION, BRO” applying to “wearing apparel, namely, shirts, t-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, pants, shorts, hats, visors, gloves, shoes.” He, or one of his representatives, actually applied for it the day after he said it. Here’s a link to the official document. h/t to the DC Sports Bog for reporting the trademark filing.
