Illinois residents will hit the road this holiday weekend in slightly greater numbers than last year despite the fact that gasoline prices remain at historically high levels, according to AAA projections.
The average price for regular gasoline in the metro area is $4.08 a gallon, compared with $4.23 a year ago, the motor club’s fuel report found. In Chicago, the average was $4.26, compared with $4.48 a year ago.
While down a bit, the price declines come on the heels of record highs earlier this spring
An estimated 1.8 million state residents are expected to travel over the holiday weekend, an increase of 0.8 percent. “Modest is the word for it,” said Beth Mosher, a AAA spokeswoman, describing the bump-up.
Of those travelers, 1.6 million will be driving to their destinations.
Nationwide the rise was a little greater, with the organization projecting 34.8 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more, an increase of 1.2 percent.
“Quite a few economic indicators show the economy is getting better for people,” Mosher said. “They are more secure in their jobs and have more disposable income.”
A survey of expected weekend travelers by AAA found that 53 percent said gas prices would not affect plans, while 47 percent said they would. Among those feeling the pinch, many said they would scrimp on other aspects of their trip, including entertainment and lodging.
As well, travelers are expected to stay closer to home over the period, which AAA defines as May 24 to 28.
