A nationwide salmonella outbreak has now sickened 116 people, with a new case reported in Illinois, federal health officials said Wednesday.
The newest case in Illinois was reported in McLean County, in the central part of the state, bringing the total number of cases in the state to 10, according to the state Department of Public Health.
The outbreak was first confirmed April 4, when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 93 people — including eight in Illinois — had been infected.
The new case in McLean County joins six in Chicago, two in Will County and one in suburban Cook County, state health officials said.
The outbreak involves salmonella bareilly, a strain of the salmonella bacterium, and has been reported in 20 states and the District of Columbia, according to the CDC. A source has not been determined. Twelve people have been hospitalized, including three in Illinois, but no deaths have been reported, officials said.
The outbreak has been connected to reported illnesses that occurred between Jan. 28 and March 31, CDC officials said. Many of the sick reported eating sushi, sashimi or similar foods in the week before symptoms began, the agency said.
