James Onwualu had the news conference set for Thursday afternoon to announce his college of choice. It couldn’t wait that long.

The 6-foot-1-inch, 205-pound athlete from St. Paul, Minn., announced his oral commitment to Notre Dame on his Twitter page and to multiple outlets Wednesday, becoming the third pledge in the Irish’s Class of 2013 recruiting haul.

“Each time I visited Notre Dame, the pull became stronger,” Onwualu told the St. Paul Pioneer Press. “When I visited other schools, I kept comparing them to Notre Dame.”

Onwualu is a product of Cretin-Derham Hall High School, the same school that Michael Floyd, Notre Dame’s all-time leading receiver, attended. He is Minnesota’s top prep prospect but does not have a star rating from Rivals.com yet.

Onwualu rushed for 549 yards on 71 carries and scored eight touchdowns in 2011, adding 27 receptions for 428 yards and five scores.
