player ready...A Chicago man held a woman captive and tortured her for more than two months inside his Northwest Side apartment, prosecutors say.
Thin, with long black hair and blond-streaked bangs, Sir Wilfred Camaligan, 22, stood silent in Cook County Central Bond Court on Sunday as he was ordered held without bond on charges of kidnapping, aggravated domestic battery and the attempted murder of a Michigan woman who moved in with him in July.
Prosecutors said Camaligan beat the alleged victim, who turned 20 during her captivity; forced her to cut herself with a knife and kneel on grains of rice; and choked her into unconsciousness during an ordeal that began in July and lasted until she escaped Friday.
Camaligan was found later that day hiding in the basement of his home in the 5300 block of West Lawrence Avenue, where the woman had allegedly been held captive.
Cook County Circuit Judge Adam Bourgeois said he normally would allow bond for similar charges but told Camaligan: “This (case) is beyond the pale.
“I don’t think there are any conditions of bond I could set that would keep the community safe from you.”
The woman had moved in with Camaligan after meeting him at a convention for fans of Japanese-style “anime” characters and corresponding with him on Facebook. Camaligan became possessive and began beating her, and he would not allow her to leave the residence without permission, Assistant State’s Attorney William Hall said.
Camaligan beat the woman with a wooden stick and a crowbar, once striking her so hard in the back that her shoulder blade fractured, charging records state. He also forced her to cut her hands and carve an “X” into her chest with a knife, Hill said. Police and prosecutors have not said how Camaligan was able to keep the woman from leaving.
On Friday, Camaligan allowed the alleged victim to leave the apartment to run an errand, and she flagged down a woman and borrowed her cellphone. The alleged victim contacted her mother, who in turn called police. Camaligan was found hiding in the basement of the residence and was arrested later that day, according to police.
Prosecutors said the woman had bruises to her legs, arms, chest and face, and she suffered hearing loss in one ear. She was treated at Resurrection Medical Center.
Investigators confiscated a black metal knife decorated with red spiders, a wooden stick with a black plastic case and a crowbar from Camaligan’s home, according to an arrest report.
A Cook County assistant public defender representing Camaligan said he is a nursing assistant and recently passed a certification exam.
On his Facebook page, “Dieh Flyboi,” Camaligan has posted numerous pictures of himself posing shirtless, with a strip of white cloth tied around his face, covering his nose. He appears to be wearing the same cloth over his face in a similar photo as he poses with the woman in a photo posted to her Facebook page.
Camaligan’s apartment is a four-flat building with office space on the first floor, just off busy North Milwaukee Avenue. The Jefferson Park library branch sits directly across the street, and a post office is a block away.
T.J. Vukan, 26, and his wife live in the building next door. Vukan said he often saw Camaligan at the library or walking through the neighborhood.
Although he didn’t know Camaligan, Vukan said Camaligan stood out because of his hard-to-miss blond bangs.
Vukan said he never saw the alleged victim, with or without Camaligan. He added that he was shocked to think he lived so near Camaligan and never noticed what may have been going on inside the apartment.
“We ran the gamut of emotions,” Vukan said. “I don’t think anyone thinks that kind of crime can happen in their neighborhood.”
