An alleged Gangster Disciples gang enforcer was sentenced to 9 years in prison today after his plan to become a hit man-for-hire backfired.

Byron Lane, 26, of Broadview, pleaded guilty to plotting to carry out a murder in exchange for $1,200, but it turned out the man who wanted to hire Lane was an undercover law enforcement officer.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Erika Csicsila played three video clips in court in which Lane discussed the murder with the undercover officer as the two sat in a parked car.

“I do this [expletive] for fun anyway,” Lane said in the video clip. “But I need (to be) compensated.”

He said he didn’t plan to follow through with the murder. Instead, he said he just wanted the money so he could move out of his parent’s basement. At the time of the undercover sting, Lane worked as a Broadview public works employee.

“That wasn’t me on the video,” he said. “It was just bait.”
