Jake Peavy prided himself on being a 200-inning staff ace. But that was with the Padres and years ago.
The truth is, Peavy hasn’t thrown 200 innings since his Cy Young season of 2007, falling to 173 a year later.
In 2009, he logged only 102 between the Padres and White Sox because of an ankle injury.
And last season, he was limited to 107 because of his torn latissimus dorsi muscle.

This season, he has thrown 94 1/3 innings but has been inconsistent, like on Friday when he pitched three solid innings then allowed seven runs over the next three frames.
Peavy (5-6) also threw eight strong innings three starts ago and has one complete game. Normally, though he has had trouble getting past the sixth.
“We don’t know exactly what he’s going to get,” manager Ozzie Guillen said. “That’s just something you can’t control.
“The injury has been about a year (in the past). But I still, in the back of my head – maybe not in his head, but in my head – think he has come from this very tough injury and this year it seems like he has been pitching more than in the past.
“Maybe he’s not 100 percent ready yet. Maybe. I just assume this.”
Peavy’s arm seems to tire faster than his mind. And it’s possible one hasn’t caught up with the other. But it appears this is what the Sox may get for the last six weeks.
“Hopefully he can finish up this year in the right way and we’ll see how he reacts next year,” Guillen said.
