A male driver was in critical condition tonight after he was pulled from a car partially submerged in a Downers Grove pond, in an effort that left six rescuers injured.
The man was traveling on Lacey Road about 6:32 p.m. when he lost control of his vehicle and landed in a pond located at 2111 Butterfield Road, said Downers Grover Police Sgt. Dave Bormann.
His vehicle was partially submerged in the pond and rescuers had to dive in to rescue him.
The man was taken in critical condition to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, Bormann said.
Four firefighters and two police officers suffered minor injuries during the rescue and where taken to an area hospital as a precaution, Bormann said.

The cause of the accident was unknown and under investigation. The driver’s age was not immediately available. Police said they could not comment on whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
