For campers who love New York City, this is a dream come true. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar this week proposed turning an old Brooklyn airport into “the largest
in America.”
Starting this year, according to Salazar, an existing campground at Floyd Bennett Field will expand from 5 to 90 campsites, including tent and RV sites. The plan is for an eventual 600 sites.
Might I also suggest that Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s plans for shoring up and improving Governors Island could carve out a spot for tent campers. But I’m sure that’s all pipe dream on my part, though I can’t think of anything more beautiful in an urban setting than spying the Manhattan skyline through the smoke of my campfire.
