It requires the concentration of golf. A sharp eye. And a steady hand.

You’ll find the ancient sport of bocce and its courts in places like Highwood.

Joe Ori heads Highwood Bocce Courts. And Mario Massa? He’s been playing bocce for much of his 92 years. “I’m like that football player, that quarterback. I keep comin’ back.”

So how’s bocce played?

“You know how to bowl? You have two balls, and you throw them against the little ball called the pallino,” which is the target, says Joe, 74. Successive players try to toss balls closer to the pallino.

And how do you get really good?

“It’s like any other sport — it’s concentration,” says Mario.
