The Nelson Algren Short Story Prize 2011 goes to Billy Lombardo, for his beautifully written story, “Clover.”

Here’s an interview with him after the award.

Lombardo, a teacher at the Latin School of Chicago, is a resident of Forest Park, and grew up in Bridgeport. For the author of four earlier books, including “The Man with Two Arms”, and a new novel for young adults “The Day of the Palidrome,” who teaches English and creative writing, this is his first fiction placed in a school setting.

The finalists are “An American Town” by Carol K. Howell of DeKalb, “Strange and Charm” by Jeff Scheidel of Westmont, and “The Tomato Lady” by Rose Hamilton-Gottlieb.

The stories will be available for your reading pleasure in a downloadable format at chicagotribune.com/books starting on Saturday.
