Just in time for summer, one of summer’s most iconic drives is back open for business.
A portion of California’s Highway 1 about 40 miles south of Big Sur, which has been closed for nearly two months due to a rock slide, will reopen Friday.
“For Big Sur and beyond, this is tremendous news and the reopening comes at a critical time for summer travel,” John Reyes, president and chief executive officer of the Monterey County Convention and Visitors Bureau, said in a statement. “Tourism is our destination’s second largest economy and Highway 1 is an important artery for the millions of visitors we welcome year-round.”
The legendary Big Sur was among the spots most affected.
I did the drive last September during the week after Labor Day (a perfect, uncrowded time) and let me tell you: it’s worth the effort. Especially these fish tacos.
