Lotties Pub, what are you trying to do to me?
An email flyer shot into my in-box announcing that, in celebration of the Bucktown bar’s 77th anniversary, specials on Saturday will include 77-cent drafts.
I’ll let you take a second.
What do 77-cent drafts sound like to you? To me, that sounds like college drinking. It’s like chugging your way through a sample sale (“It’s such a good deal, OMG”). And I’ve been trying to avoid that kind of behavior .
I could tell you it’s because I’ve grown out of my taste for Miller High Life and PBR and soliciting random people to do shots—but I would be lying. I don’t drink like I’m in college anymore because you can’t drink in Chicago like you can in your generic Midwestern college town.
When I was an undergrad, there was a Mexican restaurant that was completely unremarkable, aside from the fact that they served $1 pitchers on Thursday nights. Not mini pitchers, not personal pitchers—full-sized pitchers of beer. For a buck. I’m not sure what kind of beer we were being served, and there was no need for a glass. Classy.
But in the Chi? At $15 a pitcher, no one can afford that kind of behavior. The city has thankfully forced me to step my game up. At least, it usually does.
And then something like Saturday happens and suddenly the $20 in your pocket means you’re buying rounds and the cab home.
Nobody is against bar deals, but 77-cent drafts? Nothing about this sounds like a good idea.
This sounds like a night that ends in the kind of morning when you find your shoes in the bathtub and breathe that sigh of “ohthankgod” when you find your CTA pass/debit card/ID/passport/backup credit card nestled safely in your wallet.
That being said, I’ll see you Saturday, yes?
