Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Being something of a Civil War freak, I’ve always gone it alone while visiting the battlefields: sitting to contemplate Bloody Pond at Shiloh or perching on a rock at Little Round Top just to imagine. It’s rather spiritual. But Ken Burns, the brilliant documentarian whose “The Civil War” series is being rebroadcast on PBS in this sesquicentennial year of the war, has teamed with the Tauck travel agency to create the “Most Hallowed Ground” tour. I find that appealing.

The 11-day guided tour starts in Washington, then moves on to Gettysburg, Antietam, Petersburg and Appomattox Courthouse, also stopping at various other historic sites along the way. Though pricey at $3,980 per person double occupancy, this will be Civil War immersion, like an 11-day college course only better — paradise to those transfixed by the war.

The tours are in September and October. For details, visit
