An off-duty Chicago police officer shot and killed a man he caught trying to steal from his backyard in the Far South Side Fernwood neighborhood this morning, police said.
The alleged burglar was a man in his 40s, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
The shooting happened about 7:50 a.m. in the 10000 block of South Princeton Avenue. The officer, who is assigned to the Englewood District, approached the man in his backyard and was struck by a “cutting instrument” wielded by the intruder, police said.

The officer then shot and killed the man, police said. The officer was treated for a bruise on his arm. The intruder’s weapon, described as metal shears, was recovered.
The Independent Police Review Authority and Calumet Area detectives are investigating the incident.
