Sandburg will name Desi Vuillaume its new varsity boys soccer coach Feb. 24 at the District 230 board meeting, according to multiple sources close to the school.

Sandburg athletic director Bruce Scheidegger wasn’t ready to confirm the information.

“Absolutely inaccurate,” Scheidegger said Monday via e-mail. “There would be no one on our staff that would be in a position to confirm.

“Our process involves steps of screening applicants, conducting interviews, bringing a recommended candidate forward to the principal, who in turn recommends the candidate to the superintendent. This recommended candidate then is brought to the board of education for approval.”

This could be Scheidegger’s most important hire since he became athletic director in 2008.

Former coach Jack Ferraro retired this fall after 16 seasons, 312 victories and two state titles. Ferraro became an target for some parents last fall after Sandburg failed to advance from its Class 3A regional. The Eagles haven’t won a sectional crown since 2005.

Before moving to Sandburg in 2005, Vuillaume coached at Crete-Monee. He was Ferraro’s assistant for one year (2005) and has been the sophomore coach since.
