“We eat a lot of stupid stuff,” said Dr. Travis Stork, host of the Emmy-winning show “The Doctors” and author of “The Lean Belly Prescription” (Rodale Books, $24.99). Sweets and everything supersized are no-brainers, but rather than dwelling on what not to eat, his book explains what you can eat.

Bacon, eggs and burgers are on his list, but you have to eat them the right way. “Two eggs and three strips of bacon, or a lean burger on a whole-grain bun” is the way to go, Stork said. And breakfast is a must: “Those who eat breakfast are the leanest people in our society. ? You have to eat what you like and base your diet around those foods.” So if pasta and rice are your thing, “go for it, but make it high-fiber pasta and brown rice, which take longer to digest and have more nutrients.”

David Zinczenko: “Just making small changes can create momentum that results in big lifestyle improvements,” said the editor in chief of Men’s Health magazine.

Eat better

We underestimate the calories in what we eat by 100 percent, which packs on excess pounds. Be mindful of what you’re putting in your body, and seek out healthier options for your favorite foods.

Enough already

Stop with the sugar-filled drinks. We take in 450 calories a day in liquids, which is double what we did 30 years ago. If we could simply cut that out, we’d beat obesity in a year or two. Cut it in half, and you’ll lose 23 pounds in a year. Stop and you’ll drop 45 to 50.

Get fit: Be active in all facets of your life. This takes a certain mind-set. Don’t watch life go by; participate.

Keep ticking: Your body is a self-winding watch. Slow down and you’ll stop. Keep revved and you’ll keep on ticking a long time.

Get Mark Bittman’s “How to Cook Everything.” It’s a lifestyle bible because it makes a virtue of simplicity and good food and shows you how to maximize flavor. This will make you much better off.
