With a nationwide search under way Friday, police said a Vernon Hills woman “may be at risk” as authorities look for her and her boyfriend in connection with the beating death of her mother.

Kristina Aksman, 20, had been sought as a “person of interest” in the slaying of her mother in her Vernon Hills home but is now being described by police as “missing and endangered.”

“She has physical and mental disabilities,” said Vernon Hills police Sgt. Pat Zimmerman.

Police believe Aksman is with her boyfriend, Daniel Baker, 21, who remains a “person of interest.” They do not believe that Baker is armed.

The two are believed to be traveling together in a 2009 Nissan Rogue with Illinois license plate 4219607 registered to Aksman’s parents.

Kristina Aksman’s mother, Marina, 50, was found dead Thursday morning on the first-floor of her home in the 1800 block of Olympic Drive in the north suburb. Her husband, Robert, a delivery truck driver, was not home at the time, Zimmerman said.

Three weeks ago, a judge appointed Marina Aksman as her daughter’s legal guardian.

Zimmerman said police had received close to 100 leads and have the cooperation of the couple’s relatives. Investigators do not believe Aksman and Baker have communicated with their families.

“We’re hoping either the public helps or someone in law enforcement comes across them,” he said.

Police say they are tracking all angles, including financial transactions and cell phone records.
