The Northeastern U.S. was digging out Sunday after a major storm dumped up to 2 feet of snow in some areas, disrupting travel and hurting sales for retailers in one of their most important weekends of the year.

Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Baltimore and parts of New York state were hardest hit.

Most cities along the Eastern seaboard were returning to normal by Sunday afternoon. Airports were open and delays and cancellations, while still frequent, were moderating.

Many stores closed Saturday as the storm worsened and streets became impassable.
