For more than 50 years, NORAD and its predecessor agency have tracked the progress of Santa Claus on Christmas Eve.

It began when a Colorado Springs, Colo., Sears store misprinted the phone number for a Santa hot line. The number sent children instead to the Continental Air Defense Command, where a quick-thinking colonel had his staff check the radar for sightings of Santa.

Sure enough, the jolly old elf turned up, and his gift-delivering progress has since been relayed to callers, online visitors and now through mobile phone updates. Military personnel stationed around the world describe his sightings.

Santa watchers can get up-to-the-minute information on his whereabouts in seven languages. There’s even a real-time count of the number of cookies he has gobbled.

NORAD also offers highlights of last year’s journey, a North Pole monitor and countdown clock. Go to noradsanta.org.
