INSPIRATION: The dramatic splatter of shattered glass from a glass bottle thrown against a wall.

INTERPRETATION: A dynamic fireplace screen designed by Bloomingdale interior designer Susan Slad and constructed by Chicago craftsman Randall Kramer. The broken-glass vision was conjured by one of Slad’s clients for his home in Naperville. The 1960 Midcentury Modern home featured a circular hearth that, while striking, was incompatible with traditional, rectangular fireplace screens. The homeowner saw this as an opportunity. “This guy has a very good eye and seems to especially like things with movement to them,” Slad says. “He appreciates art; he has a nice collection of pieces in his place and sculpture outside.”

After presenting a sketch to her client’s liking, Slad handed over the project to Kramer to produce. The iron and metal screen was installed about two months ago and now both hems in and reflects the fireplace’s licking flames.
