player ready...We always dig the annual DreamHome event at The Merchandise Mart. It’s a cheap ($5 suggested donation) and convenient (located in the same busy thoroughfare passed through every day by hundreds of commuters) way for the general public to soak in high design usually reserved for the design trade and its clients.
This spring, we’re digging the DreamHome even deeper, as it features a few enhancements. The nine-room showhouse — orchestrated by 10 local designers — features a slightly larger, significantly more open layout than in years past. Whereas rooms used to be laid out in a linear, one-room-at-a-time fashion, visitors now can see and walk into multiple rooms from any single vantage point. The result is more homelike; less showlike. It also goes to prove that vastly different materials and colors can live together in harmony. Case in point: the wide variety of flooring materials used in the home, including the lobby’s sleek gray Ann Sacks marble tile, the office’s Hokanson map-of-the-constellations plush carpet, and the living room’s patchwork of antique Oriental rugs by Stark Carpet.
Oh yeah, and the DreamHome stays open for eight months this time instead of the usual three.
Cost: Suggested $5 (benefits the University of Chicago Cancer Research Foundation).
Where to find it: Open now through Dec. 18 in the North Lobby (Suite 130) of The Merchandise Mart, Kinzie and Wells Streets, 800-677-6278, merchandisemart.com/dreamhome
