How did it get the name? Named by Jabez Howe in 1869. He wanted Homewood to grow into a community of homes surrounded by the beauties of nature.

The beginning: Homewood was formerly named Thornton Station and Hartford.

Population: 19,543 (as of the 2000 census)

Where is it? About 25 miles south of downtown Chicago.

Did you know? Homewood is divided in half by the Illinois Central Railroad tracks; Flossmoor Country Club used to be named Homewood Country Club; in 2007, Forbes magazine rated Homewood as one of the three most “livable” suburbs in the Chicago metropolitan area; Washington Park Race Track was famous for its horse races, but it also was the home of greyhound racing from 1926 to 1934.

Famous residents: Joseph Aurelio Jr., whose first pizzeria opened in Homewood in 1959; John A. Miller, an inventor known as the “Thomas Edison of roller coasters.”
