Statistics don’t always tell the story of a basketball game.

Take Freeport’s 64-43 victory over Springfield in a Class 3A state girls semifinal at Illinois State’s Redbird Arena on Friday afternoon. Despite committing 27 turnovers–nine more than Springfield–the Pretzels still managed to advance to Saturday’s 12:45 p.m. championship game against Peoria Richwoods (33-3).

As Freeport coach Ryan Pierce noted after the victory, his team “can’t afford 27 turnovers against Richwoods.”

What more than compensated for those turnovers was Freeport’s hot shooting. The Pretzels (31-3) , who lost to Marshall in the 2008 Class 3A state title game, hit 56.8 percent of their shots from the field.

Suporia Dickens led Freeport with 18 points. Courtney Shiffer had 11 points, nine rebounds while Kelsey Hoeffer scored 13 and Katie Norman 12.

“Last year’s experience helped us a lot,” said Dickens, whose team will meet Richwoods for a third time this season. They split the first two matchups.

Springfield (29-4), which is making its first visit to the state finals, was led by Zahna Medley, who came off the bench to score 15 points.

The Senators will face Marshall in the third-place game at 11 a.m. Saturday. Richwoods defeated Marshall 50-35 in the first semifinal.
