Records: Northridge 23-6, Holy Trinity 14-16

Halftime: Holy Trinity 21-18

Summary: Northridge Prep found its shooting touch just in time in Tuesday night’s Class 2A sectional semifinal at Luther North. Knights guard Jack Whalen hit a three-pointer with 3 seconds left in the third quarter to end an 0-for-7 team shooting drought in the period, pulling Northridge to within 26-21. That started a 13-3 finish for the Knights. Whalen’s jumper with 1:04 to play gave the Knights their first lead since the opening quarter at 29-28. After Robert Adams sank a free throw to tie it with :52 left, Whalen dished off to wide-open center Paul Hunt for the game-winning layup with :04 left. Holy Trinity center Rickey Greer’s last-ditch shot from near mid-court at the buzzer barely left his hand as he was swarmed defensively by Whalen and Robert Rey. The Knights defense held Holy Trinity to just 15 points in the last three quarters, and forced 17 turnovers for the game. Northridge went 2-for-16 from the field in the middle quarters, including 1 of 8 from beyond the arc, scoring seven points. But the Knights converted six of their last 10 shots in the contest.

Top performers: Northridge Prep — G Jack Whalen 17 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block. Holy Trinity — G Cavell Williams 12 points, 6 rebounds; F Robert Adams 11 points.

The bonus: “We have had games like that where the ball’s not falling, and we just got together as a team and said we were going to pull through this,” Whalen said.
