Walther Lutheran 59, Timothy Christian 52
Records: Walther Lutheran 19-8 Timothy Christian 19-7
Halftime: Walther Lutheran 32-23
Summary: Guard Brandon Smith started fast (11 first-quarter points) and finished strong (10 fourth-quarter points) to lead second-seeded Walther Lutheran past the host team. The Broncos avenged a regular-season loss and advanced to Friday’s regional final, where they will face top-seeded Immaculate Conception. Walther Lutheran never trailed as Smith opened the game with back-to-back three-pointers, but Timothy went on a 11-1 run in the fourth quarter to cut its deficit to 47-46 with 4:25 left. But Smith responded by scoring Walther’s next eight points–two three-point plays sandwiched around a layup–to give the Broncos some breathing room.
Top performers: Walther Lutheran–G Brandon Smith 25 points, 7 asssists, 4 rebounds, 2 steals; F/C Brian Jackson 12 points. Timothy Christian—Robert White 15 points.
The bonus: “When I see a lane I take it,” Smith said about attacking the basket late in the game. “I go 100 percent to the basket and absorb the contact and finish.”
