This was the dream matchup of the Proviso West Holiday Tournament–except it wasn’t for the championship.

Nonetheless, No. 4 Young and No. 5 Zion-Benton put on quite a show Tuesday night with Franklin Griffin scoring on a layup with :02 seconds left to give Young a 56-54 victory in the third-place game.

“All I could think was: ‘Make the layup,’ ” said Griffin, who scored five points. “Just put it in.”

Chris Colvin (19 points, five assists) had a steal and basket with 1:42 to go that gave Young (10-5) a 54-50 lead. Zion-Benton (10-3) came within two on a pair of Ronald Steward free throws.

Owen Worthington’s two free throws with :55 left tied the game 54-54. Young held the ball until Colvin made his late drive to the basket.

“I knew he was going to pass it to me,” Griffin said. “I was ready for it. This is my first game-winning shot of the year.”

Markus Yarbrough had 22 points and seven rebounds for Zion-Benton while Lenzelle Smith added 15 points. Stanford Brown came away with 11 points and 10 rebounds for Young.

Homewood-Flossmoor 46, Fenwick 41: Michael Buchanan scored 16 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead Homewood-Flossmoor to a fifth-place finish. Buchanan, a highly rated defensive end in football, has narrowed his choices to Illinois, Purdue, Michigan State and Vanderbilt. H-F improved to 9-5. Fenwick (6-5) was led by Xavier Humphrey (16 points, seven rebounds) and Michael Black (15 points).

No. 15 Thornton Fractional North 50, St. Joseph 46: T.F. North (8-2) won the consolation championship behind Kyle Cain (18 points, 12 rebounds). Nate Rogers had 18 points for St. Joe (10-3).

Evanston 65, New Trier 60 (OT): The Wildkits outscored their long-time rival 9-4 in the extra session. Isiah Irving led Evanston (7-5) with 22 points, nine rebounds, six steals and five assists. Sean Stanley scored 20 for New Trier (4-8).

Proviso East 56, Von Steuben 53 (2 OT): The Pirates outscored Von Steuben 7-4 in the second overtime to pull it out. Jeffrey Glenn had 14 points, 11 rebounds and four steals to lead Proviso East (5-6). Jamal Dantzler had 16 points and nine rebounds for Von Steuben (4-5).
