Breakfast at Tiffany’s
By Truman Capote
Vintage, 178 pages, $12.95 (paperback)
In “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” the beguiling image of Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly may have eclipsed the complex character as imagined on the page by Truman Capote. While the movie version was charming, Capote’s tightly woven novella is darker, more complex and sophisticated. (In fact, he reportedly had Marilyn Monroe in mind for Holly.)
Republished on its 50th anniversary, and supplemented by three other stories, Capote’s “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is masterful.
