It’s not exactly alfresco weather at the moment, but if you’re one of those people who buys Christmas cards on Dec. 26, this may be the perfect time to pick up a cheap picnic table.
On Monday, the Forest Preserve District of Cook County put 2,000 of its picnic tables up for sale on eBay, for $15 apiece ($10 if sold to charities). If your family always celebrated Memorial Day or Labor Day at one of the county’s hundreds of picnic groves, the sell-off provides a rare opportunity to own a bit of nostalgia.
The district is unloading all of its traditional, all-wood models — which cost $300 new.
Over the last three years, it has phased in a newer version that’s cheaper, heavier, more difficult to vandalize and easier to maintain, according to spokesman Steve Mayberry.
The tables adorned with four-letter words aren’t included, but if you’re lucky, you may stumble upon one carved with the initials of your 7th-grade crush.
Buyers can pick up their purchases at three area locations. At this price, don’t expect shipping.
