BAD
The Dark Knight
The most popular film of the year, and one of the most critically praised. So why is it a bad first-date movie? Too many hot actors, nihilistic themes and a crippling 152-minute running time.
Prognosis: One more date (but just for lunch), followed by a breakup by e-mail, no returned calls and possibly a restraining order.
Wall-E
Another excellent film that should be avoided as a first-date movie, unless both parties are 8 years old. Taking a potential boyfriend or girlfriend to “Wall-E” says, “Let’s cuddle,” not “Let’s get it on.”
Prognosis: Three more dates with nothing more than a peck on the cheek at the end of the night, followed by a decision to “just be friends.” Added sting comes later when she starts a passionate relationship with your best friend.
GOOD
Burn After Reading
Coen brothers comedy — great first-date movie. Coen brothers drama — horrible first-date movie. If it has a bad wig or a bloodstained wood chipper, stay far away.
Prognosis: Engaged within a year. Move in together in a year and a half.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Judd Apatow deserves a special-achievement Oscar for his contributions to first-date movies.
Prognosis: Sex that night, followed by six months of dating and a very amicable breakup.
