Um, wait a minute, wasn’t Steely Dan just here?
Yes, on July 15 for a sold-out night at the Chicago Theatre. And yes, they’re back Saturday night. Fans will cheer. Cynics will suggest that it’s just to hoover up any remaining bucks that are still left lying about after that first go-round.
We’ll leave them to that.
But for a band (duo, really, of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker) with an immense catalog of hits that ended after 1980 (“Two Against Nature?” Yeah. Right.), we always wonder about set lists. Fans natter on message boards, post set lists and try to read the tea leaves. We know there will be some hits, some rarities for the real fans and some what the …?
So with that, we offer two set lists culled from fan message boards, from a July 26 show in California and an Aug. 2 show in Nevada. Read into these what you will but, personally, we’d rather have been at the Aug. 2 show for the double-hit of “My Old School” and “Kid Charlemagne.”
The lists are pretty much the same, though July 26 features “Home At Last,” the best song from “Aja” (you heard right), but Aug. 2 had “Bodhisattva” and the aforementioned “My Old School” and “Kid Charlemagne.”
What will The Dan do in Chicago? Good question. Here are those lists:
P.S.: Be sure to get there for the Chicago guitarist Bobby Broom’s Deep Blue Organ Trio, a stellar opening act.
