Wilmette police are alerting businesses to be on the lookout for counterfeit money after someone tried to spend fake $100 bills in the North Shore suburb, authorities said.

On Sunday a man tried to pay for his takeout meal with a counterfeit $100 bill, but when the clerk examined the bill she suspected it was fake and would not accept it, police said. They said the clerk returned the bill to the man who left the restaurant.

Later the same day a woman tried to pay for her food at another Wilmette restaurant with a fake $100 bill, but an employee spotted it and called police. The woman told officers she got the fake bill from a man who asked her to make change for the bill.

Suspicious bills should be held up to the light and checked for security marks, police said.
