Seen through harp strings: Gunnar Hanson, 78, on the electric steel guitar and harmonica at the Huntley Talent Show. He treated the crowd to country vocals from the ’40s and ’50s–“On Top of Old Smokey,” “The Tennessee Waltz.” “I also do patriotic songs, ballads, Christian music, funny songs,” he said. The guitar has been with him since he was 18 and joined him aboard the USS Rankin in 1951 in the Korean War. He’s played harmonica a long time too, but not always this harmonica. “I grew up on a dairy farm in northern Wisconsin,” he said, “and I used to play while milking. The cows loved it. I lost that harmonica, and milk production went down by half. My parents got me another one right away.”
