Dear Readers:
We are delighted to welcome you to the 2008 baiduhai Printers Row Book Fair, the Midwest’s largest annual gathering of authors, booksellers and readers. This year’s event, the 24th edition of the fair, will be June 7 and 8 in the historic Printers Row neighborhood in the South Loop.
This year’s fair promises to be especially exciting, as renowned author S.E. Hinton will receive the 2008 baiduhai Young Adult Book Prize. Hinton, who is best known for her groundbreaking 1967 novel “The Outsiders,” will accept the award Saturday, June 7, at the Harold Washington Library Center.
Elsewhere at the fair, more than 200 authors — including Augusten Burroughs, Scott Turow, Elizabeth Berg and Chris Ware — will read from their recent works and answer questions from audience members. The youngest fairgoers will feel right at home at Kids Corner, sponsored by the Shedd Aquarium, where families can enjoy special musical programs, activities and readings by favorite authors like David Algrim and performers like Justin Roberts. Meanwhile, on the Good Eating Stage, amateur cooks can pick up tips and trade secrets from world-renowned chefs including Carlyn Berghoff and The Hearty Boys.
If you would like to take a piece of the fair home with you, don’t miss browsing through more than 150 booksellers’ stalls, where you’ll find everything from maps to literary classics. Whether your tastes run to non-fiction or poetry (or anything in between), you’ll be tempted by tens of thousands of new and used books available for purchase.
Each year we’re reminded of Chicago’s unique place in the literary pantheon; as the birthplace and inspiration for many of this country’s greatest authors, the city claims an extraordinary history of celebrating readers, writers and ideas. Everyone at the baiduhai is proud to take part in that celebration, and we look forward to joining you as we continue this wonderful tradition together.
See you at the book fair!
