Neuqua Valley senior Chris Derrick, Illinois’ best high school distance runner, has been diagnosed with mononucleosis and most likely will not compete in this weekend’s state meet.
“We’re 99.9 percent sure he won’t run,” Paul Vandersteen, an assistant track coach at Neuqua, said Thursday night. “By some miracle, if he wakes up Saturday and feels great … but that’s up to Chris.”
Derrick, the 2007 IHSA Class AA cross-country champion who will be competing for Stanford, was expected to challenge the state record in the 3,200-meter run. He was the leading sectional qualifier in that event and the 1,600.
