Q: Last summer, I bought a large gazebo for my patio. I had it installed and I secured it with ropes and stakes so it would not blow away. I did not take into account the strong winds we have here with summer storms. Before the end of the summer the canopy was ripped to shreds. I would like to put on another canopy. Could I use tent material for the canopy? Is this advisable? Where can tent material be purchased?

A: Gazebos with roofs and concrete foundations are generally sturdy structures that are anchored to the ground. A less expensive and temporary kind of structure is a canopy, said Kurt Stuart of The Deck Yard in St. Charles. A canopy is made of lightweight materials and parts. It is usually less stable and weatherproof, he said. If the canopy was ripped up in the wind, try contacting the manufacturer to buy a replacement, he said. If you’re planning to improvise, look for awnings or tent material at a camping or awning company.
