We’ve stopped counting how many times the Clinton campaign has reminded us of how much the Obama campaign is outspending them in Pennsylvania.
But, with that state’s primary only days away now, the stakes are escalating as polls portray a narrowed contest between Clinton, favored, and Obama, challenging. As the Clinton campaign has asserted: “The path to Pennsylvania Avenue runs through Pennsylvania.”
And in the never-ending game of expectation-management, the Clinton campaign is reminding us again today of Obama’s overwhelming advantage over Clinton in spending in the Keystone State. The expectation: That Clinton can still win, despite the overpowering television campaign of her rival — bolstering her claim to electability in November.
“”Last night’s debate occurred in the context of earth-shattering, record-breaking, eye-popping spending by the Obama campaign in the state of Pennyslvania,” Clinton campaign spokesman Phil Singer said this morning. “This week, the Obama campaign is spending $3.4 million – shattering its own record that it set last week in the state…
“The Obama campaign is outspending us by two to one this week. It outspent us two to one last week….. They are outspending us by three to one overall,” he said “They are invested in Pennsylvania They are trying very hard to win the state… and win the state by a healthy margin. …. It’s important for people to keep in mind that the spending discrepancy is vast
“If Sen. Obama can’t win under these circumstances, it will confirm, in my view, that Sen. Clinton is the best candidate to take back the White House in the fall.”
