Michelle Obama sat down with Stephen Colbert, host of The Colbert Report, last night.

“Everybody knows you and your husband are elitists,” Colbert told the wife of the Democratic candidate for president and senator from Illinois. “Tell me about your elite upbringing on the South Side of Chicago.”

“We had four spoons,” she replied. “There were spoons.”

“So that tag still sticks,” Colbert said.

“And then my father got a raise at the plant,” she said, “and we had five spoons.”

Then the host of the Comedy Central show got a little mushy with Michelle Obama, with Colbert saying that people have asked him what sort of first lady she would be – “I think you’d be Jackie O.,” the host told his guest. “I hope I am not out of place in saying this: You are a very good looking lady. Do you think your husband would be ok with me saying that?”

He’d be “a little ruffled,” she said.

Ruffled enough to come on the show? Colbert asked, launching into song: “L…. is for the way you look at me…”

“He has a better voice,” Obama told Colbert.
