Village reduces fees for boating season
Customers of the public boat launch in Alsip can look forward to reduced fees and a new deck this boating season.
Starting this week, the season pass will drop from $60 to $50, and the daily fee will drop from $8 to $7.
It’s an effort to increase use of the facility, which has fallen off in recent years, Trustee Sheila McGreal said. Because the village is competing for customers along the Cal-Sag Channel, Alsip is adopting a new “customer friendly” tack, she said.
A reduction in fees, McGreal said, should go a long way toward encouraging boaters to use the launch, which can be accessed at 5200 W. 127th St.
Also, the Village Board recently voted to spend $33,000 to replace the wooden deck with an aluminum one. Boaters will not lose access to the launch pad at any time this summer.

Program aims to keep rental units crime-free
Homewood is launching a Crime Free Multi-Housing pilot program to try to keep illegal activity out of rental properties.
Focusing on the owners of large apartment buildings, the program requires landlords to include a “crime-free” addendum in their leases and conduct background checks on applicants. The addendum warns potential renters that they will be evicted if they are convicted of a serious crime or cause a disturbance, said Homewood Detective Craig Sline.
Homewood Police Chief Larry Burnson called the measure “proactive,” adding that Homewood doesn’t have a major problem with crime in rental properties. The program was unanimously approved recently by the Village Board.
The Police Department will handle the costs of the program, he said.
