Hillary Clinton and John McCain are in the lead at the moment among voters in California, the biggest prize of the slew of primaries and contests that all occur on Feb. 5, according to a Los Angeles Times/CNN/Politico poll.
Since many voters in California take advantage of the state’s liberal absentee-ballot laws to vote by mail and early voting already has started there, current public opinion is especially important in California.
The poll, conducted Jan. 11 to 13, showed Clinton led Obama 47%-31% among voters likely to cast ballots. Clinton led 47%-32% among Democrats. Unlike New Hampshire, where Clinton won among Democrats but lost among independents, she showed an even more robust lead among independents in the state, ahead 52%-29%. California allows independents to vote in the primary.
Among likely Republican voters, Arizona Sen. McCain was ahead at 20%, with Mitt Romney at 16%, Rudolph W. Giuliani at 14% and Mike Huckabee at 13%. The results for all four were within the poll’s margin of error.
