What do Jesus, the pope and the late mayor of Rosemont have in common? Their apparitions appeared in some unexpected places (and foods) in 2007, according to news reports.

– Donald Stephens, the longtime Rosemont mayor who died in April, had apparently (if you squinted your eyes, stood at a certain angle and suspended disbelief) returned from the beyond in the bark formation of a hometown tree.
Observers initially thought the 50-foot sycamore, in the courtyard of a village-owned health club, resembled Jesus. But upon closer examination, passersby were convinced the bark formation bore unmistakable facial characteristics of the mayor — a slight tilt of the head, the arched eyebrows. When asked about the resemblance, Mark Stephens, one of the late mayor’s sons, told the Tribune: “It’s unmistakable.”
– Two years after Pope John Paul II’s passing, a Polish photographer claimed an image he captured this year showed the pontiff waving from the grave — in a bonfire flame. The photo was taken near the pope’s hometown in Southern Poland on April 2, the second anniversary of his death.
-Marilyn Smith of Port St. Lucie, Fla., was making pancakes in November when she noticed what she thought were Jesus and Mary in the grill marks. She auctioned the pancake on eBay, where it sold for $338.
– The Virgin Mary made yet another blessed appearance in 2007 — this time on a garage door in Minersville, Penn. Since the oval-shaped apparition with the white aura began appearing in mid-August, hundreds have traveled to the alley to pray, kiss and snap photos of the garage door. The figure appeared at 6 p.m. each night — some say it’s a reflection from a nearby factory.
