Mother McAuley advanced to the Dundee-Crown Tournament quarterfinals by holding on for a 56-55 victory over Evanston Wednesday.
Chelsea Owens led McAuley, which has two losses to No. 4 Marian Catholic and one to No. 8 Loyola, with 15 points. Meggan Sterk had all nine of her points in the second half.
But Evanston (9-6) almost came back from an 11-point fourth quarter deficit. Darcel Retreage, who led the Wildkits with 22 points, missed a tough shot at the buzzer that would have given her team the victory. Retreage was exceptional from three-point range in hitting five of her eight attempts. Kim Davis added 20 points and 13 rebounds.
